Moraga Rotary became a chartered Rotary club in 1967. In the early years we met at the Rheem Valley Inn. New Rotary clubs require a sponsor, and ours was the Rotary Club of Orinda. In 1969 we moved to the the Soda Center at Saint Mary's College, and in 2018 we moved to the Moraga County Club, 1600 St. Andrews Drive, Moraga, CA 94556, in the St. Andrews Lounge. Currently, we are meeting online via Zoom.
Moraga Rotary was founded with 16 charter members. Each of these charter members were instrumental in establishing the course Moraga Rotary would take to better it's community and the world. Business people, parents, people committed to improving Moraga and enjoying the fellowship of others who work hard to give something back. Today club membership is about 40 members, men and women living as far as Benicia and Danville, with an age range from 25 to 80+.
Every one of the 33,000+ Rotary Clubs in the world can set their own mission that will guide it's service activities and charitable donations through the years. Moraga Rotary's mission is to "help make children better citizens of the world, through peace and understanding." And we mean all children, rich and poor, everywhere in the world. That is why we have a strong focus on children in every service project we undertake, both domestically and abroad, and why we support so many youth programs, including international exchanges.
Moraga Rotary has long put education in our community at the top of it's list, through our annual contribution to the Brother U. Albert Rahill Moraga Rotary Endowed Scholarship Fund, currently valued in excess of $103,000 at St. Mary's College. Plus our ongoing financial support of the Moraga Education Fund, the wonderful magazines we provide to all third, fourth and fifth grade students in Moraga and Canyon each year, and the ongoing sponsorship of all Moraga Odyssey of the Mind teams, plus the Interact Club at Campolindo High School.
As a result of the sweat equity that our members put into our annual fundraisers, we donate an average of $40,000 each year to charitable activities throughout the world. That's making dreams real for those that receive our prosthetic hands, and wheelchairs, and clean water, and shelter, giving them a new chance at a happier life with dignity.
Our thanks is the smile on a child's face, the thank you from a parent, and the handshake or hug from someone in need with a tear in their eye who cannot believe total strangers will help them. That's Moraga Rotary at work. Join us!
